PS2 Hits That Should Be Revisited on The PS3
On February - 17 - 2009

As we all know the Playstation 2 introduced some rather cool new IP’s during the last gen console generation. And while some of these gaming hits have made there way to the next gen consoles there still seems to be more great titles that should be harnessed on the Playstation 3. The Playstation 3 has definitely introduced some new concepts since launch and in 2009 we are already seeing some incredible new games releasing in the not so distant future. However, it would be cool to see certain titles from the Playstation 2 era which could really use a facelift utilizing the capabilities of the Playstation 3.
Here is a list of 6 titles that could potentially be big hits given the chance on the PS3;
SOUL REAVER: LEGACY OF KAIN

An incredibly rich story with some of the best voice acting in gaming. The legacy of Kain series can be listed as one of the best storytelling/gaming experiences ever. Definitely one of my personal favorites.
ICO
ICO was a sleeper when it hit store shelves, but it quickly became a MUST-BUY title. The level designs were spectacular on the PS2 and puzzles were simple yet extremely fun. The scope and layout of the ICO world was amazing. For a game where there was almost no speaking yet a lot of running and jumping ICO is one of those games that you can never forget about.
There has been rumors of a next-gen ICO but nothing substantial has surfaced yet.
SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS

From the creators of ICO, Shadow of The Colossus was an amazing and fresh title that offered an exciting an innovative gameplay experience on the PS2. Shadow of The Colossus to this day still stands as that game which displayed some of the most enormous boss battles to date. If you haven’t experienced this game I highly recommend it. To experience these kinds of boss battles on the PS3 would be breathtaking.
Twisted MetalBlack

From the genius mind of Dave Jaffe, the creator of God Of War, Twisted Metal Black was a title that took car demolition to a whole new level. Gritty, dark, raw and uncut, Twisted Metal Black was not for the faint of heart. This title was the first of it’s kind offering fast-paced car destruction with a personality. There is no other game like it.
There are rumors that EatSleepPlay, the development company headed by Dave Jaffe is currently working on a Twisted Metal Black for the PS3 but no screens have surfaced as of yet.
Mark of Kri

Mark of Kri introduced a new innovative attack style for the slasher genre. Before God of War and Afro Samurai, Mark of Kri was one of the first exciting slasher titles that allowed users to execute unbelievable death moves on multiple enemies that sent limbs flying. As a next-gen titles this could be a big seller on the PS3.
Cold Fear

I definantly agree with Twisted Metal Black, Shadow of the Colossus and ICO.
I hope that Jaffe is working on a Twisted Metal game for the PS3 because I think a Twisted Metal Black 2 (or whatever it will be called) is LONG overdue.
I don’t know what Team ICO is working on now, but I hope it’s a sequel to Shadow of the Colossus or ICO, but if it’s not a direct sequel, I hope it’s a game that connects to one of those games like how the young boy turned baby at the end of SoTC with the horns connected to ICO.
Even though I played a couple of the Soul Reaver game demo’s over the years and liked the gameplay, I never got around to buying any of the games, but I think a PS3 version of it would be interesting to see.
I remember I played both demos of The Mark of Kri and didn’t really like it that much, so I’d pass on it. I’ve never heard of Cold Fear, so I wouldn’t know what to expect from it.
Another game I think that deserves to be on this list is Jak and Daxter. I really want Naughty Dog to go back to the Jak and Daxter franchise after they finish up Uncharted 2.

I completely agree with some of your choices, especially the Legacy of Kain / Soul Reaver series. I think I must have played Soul Reaver 2 four, maybe five times because of its great combination of action, exploration, and story telling. The same goes for the followup, Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The other choices you list I can’t comment on having not played them. There are also some PSone titles which should really be given the PS3 treatment: Colony Wars and G-Police for example. I’d also love to see a next gen sequel to the 16-bit classic, Flashback!

There are many PS2 and PS1 hits that could be re-visited on the PS3. As some of you all mentioned games like Jak & Daxter, Colony Wars and War of The Monsters were great games and with the capabilities of the PS3 these games could be amazing. Off the top of my head I would also like to see a new Max Payne, Zone of Enders, HITMAN, Castlevania, Contra and maybe Tenchu if done correctly. Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 offer a wealth of possibilities on old school hits. By the way, Adrian nice avatar.

Jak & Daxter should be no.1 on this list. I’m hoping a new Jak game is announced at this year’s E3.

Definitely it will be awesome to wield the Soul Reaver blade one more time………….”my preciousss” soul devouring tool.
And why not go back to PS1 era:Oddworld-Abe was so fun to hang with, somebody remembers Heart of Darkness and the most colossal of all Critical Depth,a submarine arcade fighting sim that had a atmosphere never created in today multilayers, not mentioning single player mode.

Wow, Fisheye you must be a hardcore gamer, I haven’t heard of the Heart of Darkness and Critical Death in forever. Critical Death on the PS3 would CRAZY! By the way David in all honesty I was going to put Jak & Daxter on the list. Forgive me
So that you know there have been major talks about introducing a new Jak & Daxter title entitled Jak & Daxter: Frontier. No screenshots have surfaced yet but I’ll post some info on it as soon as I hear something substantial.

Actually the game’s title is “Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier”. IGN have a page on it but like you said, there’s no screenshots nor gameplay info released yet.
That “Teaser” page on IGN has been there for almost 2 years now. I’m guessing Naughty Dog had planned to do the new Jak game sooner but got carried away with the “Uncharted” franchise.
I don’t see why Naughty Dog can’t do what Insomniac are doing with their “Resistance” and “Ratchet & Clank” franchises, release a game from one franchise one year and the other franchise the next. That way Naughty Dog could keep all their fans happy.

David you make a good point about the development of Jak&Daxter. However, it appears as though Naughty Dog went with their cash cows initially when they introduced their first next-gen R&C and now that Uncharted is a cash cow they are full steam ahead with Drakes next adventure. I do believe some type of development is taking place on Jak&Daxter.

I’m also a Jack&Daxter fan, hope that Ready at Dawn is working right now on a thing related to J&D universe, they doi’t before with Daxter on PSP, and they made a great job……. finger crosed.
If you have interest in Legacy of Kain future, you can share our pain awaiting the sequele after Defiance on NOSGOTH.net in the forum section.
And if you didin’t find out, EIDOS will be aquaiered by SQUARE ENIX…..Amy Hennig the director of Soul Reaver till Defiance is now working for Uncharted. He was director for Jak3,Jak X,Uncharted1……but for Uncharted2 director is a guy-Bruce Straley.
Let’s hope oance again that Amy will return to her love of his life-Legacy of Kain francise, maybe EIDOS sold LofK rights to Naugty Dog.

To this day The Legacy of Kain series is with out a doubt in my top 5 best gaming experiences. Traversing the lands of Nosgoth as Raziel looking to avenge my betrayal by my vampiric brothers and Kain and then to come full circle realizing that ultimately Kain was not your enemy was damn near gaming perfection. The story, the voice acting, the puzzles, everything about the universe, the voice of the so-called God as you are manipulated to become his devourer of souls - UNBELIEVABLE!!! Amy Henning did a superb job while she was in charge of the series. It was obvious when she left the series that the quality of the story-telling and vision dropped significantly. I am aware of the Square Enix to purchase EIDOS deal but OMG, if EIDOS sold the rights of the Legact of Kain series to Naughty Dog, it would be too perfect.

l agree with all of you. I’d love to see some old titles on the playstation 3. The one I would like to see most is probably ff7. After promo that square enik put out, and the uproar it caused. When fan’s found out that it wasn’t a remake. Is evidence that old titles could be a major money maker for the industry.
It would allow old gamer’s the joy of seeing their favorite titles redone and new gamer’s to be introduced to the older series. Imagine a kid that gust started playing video games playing the original metal gear or maga man. The list go’s on to include titles like jak@daxter, zelda, prince of persia, literally hundreds of games.
Why publishers don’t do many remakes is beyond me. If an old game had high sales and you know there’s a demand for it. It would a smart move make those games. You’d cut cost by not having to have a hole production team. Eliminating unnecessary staff like writers and personal how’s jobs were done by the original team.
For now to see our favorite games on the ps3 we’ll have to download them from the playstation network. I gust wish their were more games to chose from. Ther are some good ones like street fighter. But not as many to satisfy avid gamers.

@ Soul Reaver In Training
With what were seeing today from the PS3 hardware, the desire to experience a Soul Reaver title on the PS3 is definitely at the top of my list.
