Too Much Competition In 2009 For Bioshock 2

It is official, Bioshock 2 which was scheduled to be released November 2009 has been delayed until the first part of 2010, as reported from the recent Take-Two press conference. It appears Take-Two is looking to utilize this extra time in development in order to truly bring their vision to life in Bioshock 2 and while that does sound good, could this be the only reason for the delay?

The delaying of a game of this magnitude does raise the obvious question, why? Of course we are always excited about highly anticipated titles being fully realized by their development teams however, after looking at the forecast of upcoming titles during the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2009, we think we can answer this question by stating that the 2009 competition is stiff! Very stiff. With the upcoming list of blockbuster hits in the form of new IP’s and returning sequels, (Modern Warfare 2, Assassins Creed 2, MAG, Uncharted 2, Darksiders, LEFT4DEAD 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction etc..) it doesn’t take a genius to realize why Take-Two has decided on a 2010 release date soft spot.

As we all know times are not as economically friendly as they once were leaving publishers strategizing to be careful about software launch dates. The upside to all of this is of course wonderful for gamers. As the competition continues to increase, gamers will increasingly find themselves with more and more triple A titles spread throughout the year to enjoy and that is what it’s all about.

For those of you who have yet to see what Take-Two has in store for Bioshock 2 be sure check out this 9 minute gameplay demonstration video. This is not a new video as it has been available for quite sometime now however, it is still an exciting look at the new Bioshock 2 - Enjoy!

  1. Phil Said,

No, I think Take 2 felt sorry for the other publishers.

Seriously though, the only real competition for Bioshock 2 on that list is Modern Warefare 2, and maybe Drakes 2.

Bioshock2 was delayed into FY2010, which begins in November. It had an internal release date of Oct 30, which was just in this FY. It could still release in Calendar Year 2009.

  3. Derrick Smith aka Shadowolf Said,

I strongly doubt it however as a huge fan of the franchise I would be excited, but again I don’t see it happening.

  4. Brian Said,

This is a good strategy. Way too many games come out at Christmas. Why bring it out then? Will it really be bad if they delay the game a little? I see no big deal. It’s not being delayed a year. A lot of games sell great in the winter/spring months since there aren’t as many games out then. I wish every publisher would look at this and start spreading their games out over the whole year. I buy good games whenever they come out. Even in the summer.

  5. Derrick Smith aka Shadowolf Said,

@Phil, Based on my experience with the original Bioshock I can understand your opinion however you have to remember that when the original Bioshock was released in 2007 there was only two other titles in the form of HALO 3 which released 9/25/07 and COD: MW which released 11/25/07 that was competition for Bioshock which released 8/21/07. If Bioshock 2 was to be release as planned in the month of November 2009, games like Modern Warfare 2, LEFT4DEAD2, Bayonetta, Ratchet&Clank Future: A Crack In Time and The Sabotuer would definitely cause most buyers who are the casual gamers to consider the other available titles. Also you have to consider the titles coming out the month prior as in form of Dragon Age: ORIGIN, Alpha Protocol, Demon Souls, Brutal Legends, Tekken 6, SAW, FORZA 3, NBA 2k10 and Rogue Warrior, wow! Not that all these games are AAA title but this is a lot of titles to fight through and lastly you have to consider the casual gamer. After looking at all these titles and factoring in that most holiday spending on games comes from casual buyers you have to ask yourself does Bioshock 2 look more appealing than the new titles next to it. Of course you and I know how incredible Bioshock 2 will be but a games like Darksiders, Alpha Protocol, Modern Warfare 2, and Left4Dead 2 would appeal more to a casual gamer looking for a quick fix for the holidays. Bioshock would definitely sale well but not as well as some would like to believe.

  6. name Said,

and their new release date Q1 2010 is any better?
i would rather go up against MW2 assassins creed 2 uncharted 2 and such.
than go up against GT5 heavy rain god of war 3 singularity.
they would of been alot better leaving it where it is.
they want it to sell on the PS3 but than they push it to a month where theres supose to be 3 ps3 exclusives out.
    thats common sence for ya.
