PS3 Delays Giving The Xbox 360 Some Breathing Room In 2009

Coming into 2009 anticipation towards Sony’s software line-up was at an all time high as the PS3 was primed to have a breakout year. Outside of a plethora of multiplatform titles, the playing field almost seemed unfair as Sony’s list of exclusives looked to do away with the competition from the start. With an incredible list of exclusives and a countless number of multiplatform titles coming to the PS3 this year the black behemoth was all but crowned 2009 console of the year from the start.

Today PS3 exclusive titles like GOD OF WAR III, White Knight Chronicles, HEAVY RAIN and multiplatform titles like BIOSHOCK 2, SINGULARITY and Max Payne 3 are now 2010 launch titles. Despite the software delays Sony still has a strong line-up remaining for the rest of the year however, just how strong that line-up remains to be is the real question. With MAG now speculated to be another PS3 exclusive delay title until Qtr (1) 2010, Sony is definitely losing their dominant edge in 2009 and fast.

On the competitive side of the equation the Xbox 360 has remained even keel so far not losing too many big name title along the way. With hopefully no software delay updates in the forseeable future Xbox 360 users can still expect exclusive titles in the form of Splinter Cell: Conviction, Shadow Complex, Section 8, HALO 3: ODST, LEFT4DEAD 2, FORZA 3 and the GTA4 DLC entitled Ballard of Gay Tony. While these are great exclusives, Xbox 360 user can also be excited for a great list of multiplatform titles as well in the form of ASSASSINS CREED 2, DARK VOID and the ever popular FPS Modern Warfare 2 just to name a few.

Despite the incredible start to 2009 with blockbuster exclusives like KILLZONE 2, MLB09: The Show and inFAMOUS, it appears as though the playing field has become arguably more even as we look into the latter part of 2009. With all the software delays a surprising PS3 price drop could give an attractive edge to the remaining PS3 line-up. With great exclusives like UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, DEMON SOUL’S, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time and hopefully Gran Turismo 5 along with some meaty PSN titles the PS3 is definitely not done raising the roof in 2009.

I disagree. If Sony’s released all these games in late 2009 as originally planned they would be 2009’s 360 (i.e. lack of a strong line-up). I think they want to make sure they release these high profile games in 2010 to match the buildup intensity of Alan Wake, Halo Reach, etc. Also, With MW2 already clouding up the FPS market in Q4 its suicide to release any multi-player component FPS (let a lone one that relies solely on that).

  3. mr. mister Said,

GoW3 has always been a 2010 game as soon as march ‘09 passed by without it.

regardless, i agree the playing field is “evening out” but who really expected anything different? i never expected heavy rain to be out this year, and i always had doubt about MAG (though thats still only a rumor so its pointless to discuss)

still ps3 has a plenty strong line up, including games you forgot to mention. like NG: Sigma, and probably GT5. and also PG: Shooter and Fat Princess to include some big PSN titles. plenty to go around.

I don’t want to be a complete asshat, but your editors need to start fact checking your and whoever else’s articles. GoW3, Heavy Rain, and WKC WERE NOT slated to be released in 2009. With the crap article written about Heavy Rain I’m amazed you guys don’t do better research or at least read news elsewhere. I see how you cap off the article with a compliment to the remainder of Sony’s year, but all the title you mentioned as delayed have not in fact been delayed…the more you know, you know.

Get some better caliber writers around here and you may end up with a decent site, but until then all your articles are devilishly disguised fanboy articles slanting the PS3, regardless of what kind of kudo you throw in there.

  6. Mark Said,

Those first 3 PS3 titles were NOT 2009, there were ALWAYS 2010. So thats 3 multiplats delayed, theres no story here.

  8. Dion Said,

Well, either way, Sony still has the stronger line-up overall. They’re spreading their games out evenly, and plus, I don’t think we can count on all of those Xbox 360 games to do good in both commercially and being well-received. But I can guarantee that Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves are sure to be some of the best games of 2009!

Another way of looking at it is that Sony has full domination in 2010. And that’s even better, considering there is no price drop yet, and I suspect Sony are waiting for March 2010, and then they’re going to get all their good games lined up. God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5 are alone enough to sell the PlayStation 3 to a certain extent. But with The Last Guardian, he next Resistance (maybe), Heavy Rain, the next Jak and Daxter (maybe), Final Fantasy Versus 13 (maybe 2010, if not, definitely 2011) and finally, Final Fantasy 13 being exclusive in Japan, Sony is sure to capture a lot of the market. Not only are those games looking to be well-received, but most of them are big name titles, meaning they will sell more than the usual 1 million - 2 million units.

  9. Dion Said,

And also, I forgot to add, some of those Xbox 360 exclusive titles are coming to the PC. So, in my opinion, I can’t call them exclusive.

  10. Mark Said,

^ The only 360/PC games in that list are L4D2 and Splinter Cell, which is irrelevant anyway b/c the system requirements will be laughable compared to a $200 Xbox.

We know ModernWarfare2 is hitting this year. We know Fat Princess is hitting this year. - There are still plenty of games to keep me stoked this fall. :D

  12. Sammo Said,

i agree that the PS3 has a strong line up this year with Ninja gaiden sigma 2 and uncharted 2 and will dominant 09, as well as 2010 with 360 titles such as mass effect 2, mechwarrior, u-wars and alan wake

  13. name Said,

they really need MAG to release in november.
and heavy rain i cant believe they set that back.
what arron greenburg said just before E3 is so true.
“we like to under promise and over diliver”
sony needs to take that idea, how many times have they announced a exclusive than its been delayed atleast 4 times ala killzone 2 heavy rain and GT5.

  17. Bryan Said,

Every year seems to be the year of the playstation 3 and every year it just disappoints, I’ve owned 4 ps3’s from the initial launch version to the newest, um, is it 40gig version? and have always ended up trading them in or selling them to get add-ons/games for my 360. C’mon Sony, get your act together nd start pumping out the ground breaking games we were promised

Posted on July 16th, 2009 at 7:29 am

  18. SameOld Said,

The same thing is said at the start of every year - “the 360 has nothing this year, the PS3’s line up is great - this is the year of the PS3!”. lol. Another line that the Sony fanboys repeat regularly is “just wait until game X is released! It’ll sell Playstations by the millions”, except game X comes out, nothing happens, then they move on to game Y and the whole cycle repeats. The only title that had any noticeable effect on PS3 sales is MGS4 and the ripples from that lasted all of a week. You have to feel sorry for the poor souls, watching their once mighty market leader fall into last place and slipping further behind as every week passes, while any momentum Sony try and build is crushed as nearly every game ends up being delayed.
