Blu-ray Getting Even Bigger

Blu-ray getting bigger just adds more creative thought and possibilities for movies and games. According to Blu-ray.com, Sony and Panasonic have announced the development of a new optical technology which has allowed for more blu-ray capacity. Currently offering up to 25GB of capacity on single-layered disc, this new increase pushes a single-layered blu-ray disc to 33.4GB. So basically they have added an extra 8.4GB of space. To help you understand what this means, a double-sided single-layer dvd disc hold 9.5GB at maximum capacity.

What does this mean for the PS3? Well for starters, all that would be needed to offer this on the black behemoth would be a firmware update. Also, due to the current state of momentum with PS3 sales which is grabbing more and more marketshare, this new blu-ray update only adds to the PS3 longevity. Instead of cutting games in half (ala RAGE) or offering multiple disc (ala Final Fantasy XIII) due to the limited storage space of the dvd format more developers will find themselves quite happy exclusively developing on Sony’s console.

This announcement does not explain when this update will go live as an update in blu-ray specs however, later this year we should see an update.
